March Plans Hot Up For "Wake Up Auckland"!

\Note details for Community Notices

"The Wake Up Auckland" campaign looks forward to a large and enthusiastic march on Saturday 16 March. The march will leave sharp at 11 am at Queen Elizabeth Square and will proceed to Myers Park for a rally and concert.

The rally following the march will include speakers from many of the perspectives being excluded by the new Auckland City Council - spokespeople for housing, tree advocates, church and migrant representatives. There will also be music - including Don McGlashen , Pacifca performers and other singer-song writers.

Wake Up Auckland will also rally at 5-30 pm on Wednesday 13 March before the Council Meeting which was deferred from February 28. The meeting will consider proposals to sell general rental housing.

The march gives an opportunity for Aucklanders to come together to express their outrage at the current Council's ' sell off - cut back' agenda. "Wake Up Auckland' is a burgeoning movement - which was galvanised into action in the wake of the "Birch Report" and the non- mandated draconian proposals it advocates : selling pensioner and rental housing, privatising water, reducing community spending, sidelining public transport, phasing out chemical free weed spraying and ending the general tree protection. Otehr moves include sidelining the needs and interests of Pacific people and migrants. The organising team meets weekly and has drawn in diverse community organisation networks.

"Wake Up Auckland" will hold the last of a highly successful series of 9 suburban meetings on Monday March 11 at St Heliers Bay Community Centre starting at 7-30 pm. The earlier meetings drew in many people such as pensioners who find it difficult to travel in from suburbs such as Otahuhu. Now groups are getting together to organise transport to the march. The March and the Wake Up Auckland Petition which aims for hundreds of thousands of signatures, have also been promoted at community events such as Pacifica and the Refugee and Migrant festival.
