Hobson Bay sewer pipe decision

Hobson Bay sewer pipe decision

Auckland Mayor John Banks applauded Watercare’s announcement today to bury the sewer pipe across Hobson Bay.

“I have long had a vision to see Hobson Bay transformed into a first-class marine reserve. Burying the sewer pipe has been an important part of my vision for Hobson Bay and I am delighted this dream is now a reality.”

Mr Banks said the $47 million cost of burying the pipe, rather than upgrading it, is money well spent.

“I believe in doing things once and doing them right. The new pipeline will be better for the environment and will reduce overflows substantially. It is a great intergenerational investment and Hobson Bay residents will be pleased to see this prehistoric eyesore disappear.”

Today’s announcement follows much consultation between Watercare and the community.

Mr Banks’ other commitments for Hobson Bay include building a boardwalk around the foreshore, creating an international rowing course, and ensuring the Outboard Boating Club’s excellent facilities are maintained.

“I want Hobson Bay to be an inner-city marine reserve with healthy fish and plant life. Burying the obtrusive sewer pipeline is a significant step forward in the life of Hobson Bay,” Mr Banks said.
