Regional Council candidates named

Greater Wellington Regional Council received 27 nominations for 13 positions when enrolments for the local government elections closed at midday today.

The preliminary candidates and their constituencies are as follows:

Maurie Bognuda Lower Hutt
Glen Evans Lower Hutt
Peter Edwin Glensor Lower Hutt
Sandra Greig Lower Hutt
Steve Ritchie Lower Hutt
Rosemarie Thomas Lower Hutt
Dick Werry Lower Hutt
Robin Gunston Porirua
Margaret Shields Porirua
Rex Kirton Upper Hutt
Ian Buchanan Wairarapa
Perry Cameron Wairarapa
David Kernohan Wairarapa
Rick Long Wairarapa
John Wardell Wairarapa
Judith Aitken Wellington
Sally Baber Wellington
Hugh Barr Wellington
Paul Bruce Wellington
Michael Fleming Wellington
Michael Gibson Wellington
Chris Laidlaw Wellington
Terry McDavitt Wellington

Electoral Officer Wayne Hastie said the list was preliminary until it was checked all candidates were eligible to stand for election to the regional council. Greater Wellington has 13 councillors including a chairperson, who is elected by the councillors, to cover the following constituencies:

Wellington Constituency 5 members Lower Hutt Constituency 3 members Wairarapa Constituency 2 members Porirua Constituency 1 member Kapiti Coast Constituency 1 member Upper Hutt Constituency 1 member

Dr Hastie said that, subject to the final checking, Chris Turver, Kapiti, and Rex Kirton, Upper Hutt, would be declared elected as they were the sole candidates for those constituencies which only required one member.

Voting papers, including candidate information, will be sent out to enrolled voters between 17-22 September and must be posted back so they are received by 9 October.
