Organisers of the Future Living environmental expo, to be held in Christchurch this weekend are today applauding the stand taken by the mothers group calling for equal promotion of cloth nappies and other more sustainable methods of keeping baby clean, dry and happy.

Brian Walsh, of the Future Living Expo says, " The Green Party has identified by using throwaway nappies each child during its infancy puts two tonnes of unrecyclable waste in NZ landfills"*
"Another problem is the longevity of throwaway nappies reportedly taking 75 years or as long as 500 years to breakdown*.
That means if Shakespeare's mum used throwaway nappies todays archeoloists right now may be able to dig them up today and analyse what he'd had in his feeds - and while that might have been great for a deeper understanding of the Swan of Avon, it would be not so great for our environment"

One of the the Future Living Expo's community organisation standholders are exhibiting on the throw away nappy issues and organisers are expecting some lively discussions at that stand throughout the weekend. Also at the expo the Christchurch City Council are showing the way by hold composting classes at their stand, helping to reinforce the message that 'it's not rubbish it's resource'.

"With the Councils rubbish bag issues to residents being reduced from 52 to 26 rubbish bags, from May 2004, we wanted to show Cantabrians that the work of organisations like the Christchurch City Council and the Recovered Materials Foundation make Canterbury one of the better areas in NZ to easily get with the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle options as part of the new sustainable lifestyle," Brian Walsh said.

The Future Living Expo is on on this weekend on the 29-30th January, from 10am-4pm each day at the Horticultural Hall (diagonally opposite the Public Hospital) on Riccarton Ave. More info on http://www.futureliving.co.nz/
