February 7, 2005

Bike Wise week runs from February 12 to 20, with the week's major event, Bike to Work Day, on February 16.

"This is a great chance for cyclists to get together and have some fun, and be rewarded for choosing a non-polluting transport that doesn't add to traffic congestion," North Shore City's transport planner, Aimee Mackay says.

"The council will host a free Biker's Breakfast on Bike to Work Day, outside North Shore City's head office, 1 The Strand, Takapuna from 6:30am to 8:30am," she says.

"Cyclists coming to the breakfast can enjoy a group ride with a police escort on one of our escorted rides, by meeting at sites at Northcote, Bayswater and Forrest Hill at 7am."

Cyclists will be provided with a delicious breakfast, and can:

* Give their views on the proposed Milford-Takapuna on-road cycle route;

* Pick up a guide to North Shore City popular cycle routes;

* Receive a free goody bag, including tyre repair kit and water bottle;

* Win spot prizes donated by local businesses.

For cyclists who are unable to make the breakfast, North Shore City Council staff will be handing out goody bags at Devonport Wharf, Bayswater Wharf, and locations in the East Coast Bays, Albany, Birkenhead and Glenfield.

"North Shore City Council is committed to promoting cycling both as a recreational activity and as a method of sustainable transport. The Bike Wise breakfast is a great way to raise the profile of cycling, and give cyclists a chance to have their say," North Shore City's transport planner, Aimee Mackay, says.
