Steel workers welcome anti-dumping move

The union that represents steel workers is welcoming the Government’s commitment to action on steel dumping.

EPMU national secretary Andrew Little was part of an industry delegation that met Commerce Minister Paul Swain and Deputy Prime Minister Jim Anderson recently to urge the government to take strong, swift action against any increase in steel imports that threatens to damage the local industry.

The group fears that the imposition of tariffs on steel imports into the United States will lead other countries to dump cheap steel in New Zealand.

Mr. Little today welcomed an announcement by Mr Swain that steel imports would be closely monitored and action taken to combat any sign of steel dumping.

“The New Zealand steel industry is one of the most efficient in the world, Mr. Little said.

“It is important to our economy because it supplies a large part of the local steel market, it earns export dollars, and it provides high-skilled, well-paid jobs for New Zealanders.”

More than 20,000 people work in the steel and associated industries.
