Career Change for RNZ Political Editor
Radio New Zealand Political Editor, Al Morrison, is to relinquish his public broadcasting role at the end of this week to take up a senior management position as General Manager, External Relations, with the Department of Conservation.
The decision, announced today in a joint statement from Al Morrison and Radio New Zealand will be effective from Friday 18th October.
In making the announcement, Radio New Zealand Chief Executive, Sharon Crosbie, acknowledged the contribution Al Morrison has made over the past 5 years.
"So many listeners have told us how much they valued Al's ability to demystify the politics of the day - he had a real gift for making sense of it all", she said. "We're all really sorry to lose him but fully understand his need to seek new challenges in the area of general management. I'd like to record my thanks and appreciation for his warmth, professionalism and distinctive style. I hope that the company can entice him back some time in the future".
Al Morrison, while obviously reluctant to relinquish the high profile political editorship at Radio New Zealand, acknowledged that the time was right for another career step.
" This is an irresistible challenge and a major career shift for me. As a journalist, I observe problems I’m not responsible for and pick apart other people’s solutions that I’m not accountable for. When the frustrated victims cry ‘ if you’re so smart, tell me what to do ‘, I need only remind them that it’s me who is asking the questions.
“ That is not to discount the journalist’s role. It is unique, and it is critical to a vibrant democracy. I have a deep respect for those who stick with it, but for me, it is time to go and do something else. Now is the time to take responsibility for solutions, which is why I now seek a general management role.
“I have been Radio New Zealand’s political editor for five years and in that time I’ve had a lot to say for myself. It is time to move aside and give someone else a go. Listeners deserve a fresh perspective. The job is a privilege and I’ve loved every minute of it, working with a bunch of committed, challenging people and talking to a bunch of committed challenging listeners. I'll miss them all. “
Al Morrison’s final political commentary will be with Linda Clark on Nine to Noon on Friday 18th October.
Radio New Zealand will make an announcement on the appointment of a new political editor in due course.
