Regional Power Savings Continue To Rise

WINTER POWER TASKFORCE

11 June 2003
Media Release

REGIONAL POWER SAVINGS CONTINUE TO RISE

All regions of the country reduced power consumption last week, helping to lift the national savings effort to 10 per cent.

Dunedin and the lower South Island continued to lead the way, with savings of 12.3%. Wellington and the upper South Island also exceeded the 10% target with savings of 11.5% and 10.3%, respectively.

Auckland and Northland recorded savings of 8.8% and the Central North Island increased savings to 9.2%.

Winter Power Taskforce co-ordinator Patrick Strange praised the regional efforts. “Regional savings efforts have been climbing steadily in recent weeks, helping to lift national savings.

“This savings effort has been a key factor in a reduced risk of power shortages later this winter. Lower demand has reduced drain on hydro lakes and hydro storage levels are now at a more comfortable 86% of average.”

- Electricity savings for the 24 hours ended midnight yesterday (Tuesday 10 June) were 8.5%, in line with the previous day’s. Total demand was 103.1 GWh, compared with 108 GWh in the prior year.
