Sunday Star-Times Editor To Leave

For release: July 1, 2003

Sue Chetwin, editor of the Sunday Star-Times since 1998, announced today that she has taken voluntary redundancy and will be leaving the paper following the sale of INL’s publishing assets to Fairfax New Zealand Ltd.

“After more than 15 years with INL and nearly five at the helm of the Sunday Star Times, I thought it was a good time to move on. I’ll miss the hurly burly of newspapers and working with some of the country’s best journalists. The SST is a great newspaper and a leader in its market, and I wish them all continued strong success,” Ms Chetwin said.

Terry Quinn, Publisher of Fairfax Sunday Newspapers, paid tribute to Chetwin’s leadership of the paper: “Sue has presided over a steady growth in readership, circulation and quality journalism at the SST in recent years. She led the successful revamp of the broadsheet in February She leaves with our thanks and best wishes.”

Peter O’Hara, Chief Operating Officer of Fairfax New Zealand Ltd, said: “Sue worked for INL for many years, moving up the ranks in Wellington and briefly in the Waikato before becoming editor first of the Sunday News and then the Sunday Star-Times. We wish her well in the future.”

Star-Times deputy editor, Shayne Currie will become Acting Editor.
