Statistics New Zealand Releases Community Profiles

Statistics New Zealand has released a set of web-based Community Profiles covering all of New Zealand. The profiles have been developed as a free community service. Statistics New Zealand is promoting the profiles to the media as a useful resource to:

- find background information about a particular area
- analyse and compare different areas
- refer audiences to additional information.

What information is contained in the profiles?

More than 2,000 areas are profiled, ranging from regional councils to cities, urban areas, districts, rural centres and area units (similar to suburbs).

Each profile has a large amount of information including:

- trends in the population
- characteristics such as age, income, ethnicity, education levels and employment
- levels of household spending
- numbers of businesses.

Accessing and using the profiles

To access the profiles, either visit www.stats.govt.nz/area or go to our homepage (www.stats.govt.nz) and click on the map of New Zealand. If you require any assistance, phone our Information Centre (details below).

If you need information on a particular geographic area for use in a news item or feature, we encourage you to make use of these profiles. We also encourage you to refer to the profiles as a source of additional information for readers: "More detailed information on this area can be found in Statistics New Zealand's Community Profiles ( www.stats.govt.nz/area)."

When quoting figures from the profiles, please note that the information is largely based on 2001 Census data. To find out if supplementary statistics or more recent data are available, please contact our Information Centre. Please forward this advisory to all relevant staff in your organisation.
