How your pay negotiations went

How your pay negotiations went

Despite buoyant employment, frequently reported skills shortages, and heady consumer confidence, the National Wage and Salary Survey this year registered an overall average increase of 3.86 per cent in basic wages and salary remuneration, only a fraction higher than last year (3.82 per cent).

Furthermore employers are anticipating pay rises over the next year to average 3.38 per cent overall, about the same as last year’s expectations.

“No one is expecting any large build up of wages pressure,” said the Survey’s manager for the Employers & Manufacturers Association, Graeme Perfect.

This year’s annual nation wide salary survey was the ninth; it’s New Zealand’s longest established and most comprehensive. The 605 employer organisations participating supplied extensive data in July for 94,043 employees in 208 positions across 19 job categories.

The average reported increase for senior managers was 4.48 per cent, down from a 4.51 per cent increase last year. For middle managers the increase was 4.28 per cent and others 4.2 per cent, with the average overall increase paid in salary and wages up 3.86 per cent. 58 per cent of senior managers got a pay rise of between 3-5 per cent; 57 per cent of middle managers got between 3-5 per cent; 51 per cent of others also got 3-5 per cent.

The basic figures don’t include performance incentives, bonus payments, or benefits such as superannuation or company cars; these will be the subject of a separate release soon.

The Survey data also provides a national indicator with information on regional variations, redundancy and overtime practices, plus remuneration stats for a range of industry sectors, and upper, median and lower quartile bands for most jobs.

“The fastest growing pay packets are those of tool makers, up a whopping average 20.4 per cent for the year,” Mr Perfect said.

“Toolmakers nationally are now getting an average basic pay exceeding $51,000, plus performance bonuses and other benefits in many cases.

“Other rapid movers include petrol motor mechanics, enjoying some catch up from last year’s negative result; general managers for organisations employing between 50 and 199 staff, up 9.5 per cent to $123,277; and computer analysts and systems engineers also enjoying a catch up from last year’s slightly negative outcome.

“Job types in the doldrums include marketing/ business development managers, down five per cent to $81,860; skilled shop assistants, down 6.7 per cent to $25,586, and HR Managers who recorded a nil increase at $49,936.

“The survey’s wage and salary figures are averages and should be considered in terms of trends over at least two or three years,” said Mr Perfect.

“Areas where pay is rising faster than the average of 3.86% tend to be those where skills are in short supply.
