Fairfax appoints new editorial manager

Fairfax New Zealand announced today that Terry Quinn, Publisher of Fairfax Sunday Newspapers, has been appointed Group Editorial Development Manager.

His objective will be to help the group’s editors and general managers grow readership by improving the quality of content and design, and strengthening the newspapers’ relationship with their respective communities.

Quinn, 52, has been Publisher of the Sundays since May 2002. Both the Sunday Star-Times and the Sunday News have just recorded significant increases in circulation. He previously worked in the US as Senior Vice President responsible for editorial and circulation on a group of 60 dailies across America and Canada. He also edited two UK metropolitan evening newspapers and a national daily, the Daily Record – Scotland’s biggest newspaper. He was Editorial Director of Thomson Regional Newspapers in the early 90s when it was Britain’s largest publisher.

Fairfax Chief Operating Officer and Editor-in-Chief Peter O’Hara said: “This appointment signals the commitment Fairfax has to quality journalism and development of our mastheads.

“We are fortunate to have someone of Terry’s experience and skills to help us develop our newspapers and grow readership. They are already of a high standard but we want to take them to the next level.”

Terry Quinn said: “I’ve been very lucky to have had the opportunity to work in different countries in a variety of roles. New Zealand has been a wonderful experience and we’ve been able to achieve a lot of growth at the Sundays. I now look forward to working with our excellent Fairfax editors on plans to make our readers even happier.”

Quinn will continue as Publisher at Fairfax Sundays until May 2004 but will begin working on some group editorial projects immediately.

O’Hara said that Fairfax is embarking on a recruitment strategy to ensure strong succession is put in place at Fairfax Sundays over the next six months.

“Terry has led significant improvement in the Sunday newspapers and we are intent on continuing that development while also making full use of his skills across the company.’’
