Getting Broadband To More New Zealanders

Getting Broadband To More New Zealanders

New JetStream packages announced today will put broadband within the reach of a whole lot more New Zealanders, Telecom Chief Executive Theresa Gattung said today.

“It’s a great milestone for New Zealand to be able to offer broadband products at prices like these,” Ms Gattung said.

“Broadband is already good value in New Zealand. With these new packages New Zealanders will get even better value.

“Through a combination of our own technology and the wireless broadband delivered over BCL’s network, we can now deliver broadband to more than 90% of New Zealanders. With the launch of a satellite service in the next few months virtually everyone will be able to get broadband.

“Few countries could better that – and with other broadband providers getting into the market encouraged by PROBE, customers can be assured there’s strong competition to keep prices down and keep developing new services.

“At the same time we are working hard on the wholesale front to deliver broadband products to other players in the industry.

“Just today we have delivered Telecom’s submission to the Government on the Commerce Commission’s recommendations regarding unbundling of Telecom’ s services.

“The Commission has recommended a form of unbundling which strikes a balance in what has been a longstanding debate. If the Government endorses this recommendation, we’ll be doing our best to make it work and get on with business.

“We have put together a dedicated team to deliver the unbundled bitstream services which the Commission recommended. We’re also working on the unbundled partial circuits offer which we put to the Commerce Commission.

“Together, those initiatives will mean that our competitors will be able to deliver their own broadband services for business and residential customers over the Telecom network, and they will be able to offer broadband services to corporate clients who need to connect multiple locations.

“We are also looking forward to working with local communities through PROBE and the E-regions initiative to fire up local use of broadband and develop more applications.

“The momentum around broadband is really picking up in New Zealand. This is an exciting time for the industry – and for customers,” Ms Gattung says.
