Mazda 6 and Mazda Atenza Recalled

MAZDA6 RECALL

ALSO APPLIES TO IMPORTED MAZDA ATENZA

Mazda New Zealand is recalling Mazda6 vehicles manufactured between June 1st 2002 and February 14th 2004 to enable modifications to be made to the vehicles’ fuel tanks and indicators.

The recall also applies to Japanese imports of the Mazda6 known as Mazda Atenza.

Information received from Mazda Japan indicates that under high ambient temperature the fuel tank insulator and exhaust pipe may interfere with each other, allowing the surface temperature of fuel tank to increase, which may damage the surface of the plastic fuel tank.

With regard to the indicators there is a possibility they may intermittently stop working due to a poor contact.

Peter Aitken, managing director Mazda New Zealand stressed the risk of damage to the fuel tank is minimal.

“Our primary concern is the safety, reliability and performance of our customers’ vehicles so as a precautionary measure we are in the process of contacting all Mazda6 and Mazda Atenza owners affected by the recall and asking them to contact their local Mazda Dealer as soon as possible so that a heatproof pad can be fitted to the fuel tank and a modification can be made to the indicator light.”

“Compiling the list of owners of the imported Mazda Atenza was a time consuming process but we felt including these vehicles in the recall was the responsible approach to take.” 4,033 Mazda6’s and 138 Mazda Atenza’s are affected by the recall.

The work required will be carried out free of charge (both parts and labour). If Mazda6 or Mazda Atenza owners have any questions relating to these modifications, they can call the toll free number 0800 800 626.
