Ford Ba Falcon Supercar Inspired 'Wheel Barra' To Tear Down Track In Red Bull Trolley Grand Prix

A group of Wanganui Motors Ford employees are preparing a special entry in the 2005 Red Bull Trolley Grand Prix – a Ford BA Falcon V8 Supercar styled trolley, which they hope will get them to the front of the field.

The Red Bull Trolley Grand Prix, which takes place in the Auckland Domain on February 13, is not the first time the enthusiastic part time racers have entered the Grand Prix – unfortunately their 2003 attempt ended with a spectacular crash on the wet track.

"We've put a whole lot more thought and effort into this year's campaign," said Rob Stewart, Service Manager at Wanganui Motors.

"Last time was a real learning experience, and we've modified our trolley build programme quite significantly. We were initially finding it a struggle to keep the trolley within the 80kg weight limit, but we're confident a few of the tricks we have up our sleeve will stand us in good stead come race day."

There are five people in the team, and all but one of them work at Wanganui Motors.

"We've had fantastic support from the dealership staff - they are almost as enthusiastic about the race as we are – and we have also found a number of sponsors to help with the construction of the trolley," said Robert.

Sponsors for the team include Ford New Zealand, Wanganui Motors, Castrol, Nalcon Aluminium, CRC, Bike Shed, Tioga Tyres, Enzed and WD Open.

"We really enjoyed the event when we competed two years ago, and were impressed by the professional way in which it was run. Above all else, we love the fun aspect of the day, but also really enjoy the technical and artistic aspect of preparing the trolley," added Robert.

"Whether we finish first or eightieth, we've had a ball already. However, if the weather stays fine and our driver stays on the track, I know we can definitely be at the sharp end of the field."
