LAKE TAUPO ARTS FESTIVAL 2004

With its fifth biennial Arts Festival TAUPO will be the centre of New Zealand for arts events from Waitangi Weekend to 15 February 2004.

The beautiful lakeside setting will form the backdrop for a stunning programme of dance, theatre, comedy, music, cabaret, children's events, FREE activities, exhibitions, glass-blowers, juggling and street theatre. The Festival features New Zealand and international artists.

EVENTS

Waitangi Family Weekend 6 - 8 February A dynamic programme with daytime and evening events for all the family including a FREE concert with top NZ R'N B hip hop band Nesian Mystik, dance, The Juggling Olympics, jazz, street theatre, storytelling, theatre for children, glass blowing, and evening shows including White, Mahinarangi Tocker, Manic Opera and Vula.

Mahinarangi Tocker - a new show by this award-winning singer, "The Mongrel In Me", celebrating her Maori, Celtic and Hebrew roots. Presented by arrangement with NZ Festival 2004 and premiering at Lake Taupo Arts Festival.

White - a beautiful dance work by Raewyn Hill around the theme of sleep. Pure movement, powerful, emotive, intense.

Manic Opera - outrageous comedy and soaring a cappella harmonies from "A Maori, a Pom and a Jock".

The Great Juggling Show - Circus meets cabaret with a dash of comedy. Family fun for Waitangi Weekend, featuring top NZ and international jugglers and acrobats. In association with NZ Juggling Festival 2004 http://juggle.org.nz

Vula - Take an imaginative journey to an island lagoon. A beautiful, funny, lyrical play about Pacific Island women and the sea. Traditional song and dance, plus music by Gareth Farr.

The Legend Returns - Comedy/music. Helen Moulder and Rose Beauchamp of Hens' Teeth fame present a heart-warming, wickedly funny look at a failing opera singer and her longsuffering accompanist.

Flight of the Conchords - "High on Folk". New Zealand's foremost digi-bongo-acappela-rap-influenced guitar-based bongofunk folk band. Pin-sharp comedy, original songs celebrating the unlikely and the preposterous. Best newcomers at Melbourne international Comedy Festival, nominated for the coveted Perrier Award, Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2003.

The Untold tales of Maui - Taki Rua Productions and Humourbeasts present a fast-paced, satirical and very funny take on the tales of a New Zealand mythical hero.

Hot Pink - Cabaret-style performance poetry show dripping with glamour, glitter and mountains of pink plastic flowers. A naughty night of pink poetry you won't want to miss!

Odyssey - NZ's John Bolton directs Australia's Andreas Litras in a funny and moving tale of migration from Greece to Australia, featuring Greek song and dance and intertwined with the story of Odysseus' return from Troy. An outstanding piece of theatre.

Hot Club Sandwich - Andrew London, Terry Crayford, Nik Brown. Cool jazz with some of NZ's hottest musicians. "It's jazz but not for the purists - it's way too accessible!" - Mike Moroney

Caitlin Smith & The Fondue Set - an eclectic cocktail of country ballads, soul, funk, Led Zeppelin and even a dash of Don McGlashan from the silky smooth voice of Caitlin Smith and the subtle sophisticated accompaniment of guitar duo Nigel Gavin and Steve Gerrish.

The Daylight Atheist - The award-winning play by Tom Scott, with Grant Tilly playing the hilarious, tragic and rambunctious Danny Moffat.

Moana and The TRIBE - While pushing the boundaries of Maori music, Moana Maniopoto and The TRIBE have become one of the most successful indigenous bands to emerge from Aotearoa. Colour, energy and passion in an exhilarating performance fusing Maori musical elements and Western grooves.

Kate Dimbleby's New World - A new show from one of the stars of Taupo Festival 2002. Kate and her music take a trip from Nashville to Memphis, from New Orleans to New Zealand. With her dangerously eligible boyband (Julian Hinton piano, Jonty Fisher bass and Ben Reynolds drums) Kate returns to play Taupo Festival 2004. Presented by arrangement with NZ Festival 2004 and premiering at Lake Taupo Arts Festival.

New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, The Lion Foundation Heartland Tour - A programme of pure enjoyments! Schumann, Weber, Mendelssohn, Beethoven. Presented by Lake Taupo Arts Festival in partnership with the NZSO.

Annabel Langbein - Sicilian Flavours, taste of the sun. The exuberant flavours and tastes of sun-drenched Sicily. Test out the dishes from this Mediterranean island.

PLUS Footnote Dance with Feet First 2004, a programme of new works, and Terrific Taupo, a performance with local students; "Boxes" - a puppet show from Capital E Children's Theatre; Street theatre, lunchtime concerts, storytelling, juggling, contemporary Maori writers, glass-blowers at work, Crossings - the Mighty River Power exhibition featuring national and local visual artists.
