Emirates Tees Off NZ Sponsorship With Open Golf

Emirates, the Dubai-based international airline, today announced that its first major New Zealand sponsorship will be the 2004 Holden New Zealand Open golf tournament in January.

Emirates will be a major sponsor and official carrier for the event, to be played at The Grange course in Auckland from January 16 to 19.

Chris Lethbridge, Country Manager New Zealand, said: "We have gained a great deal of public awareness in the relatively short time since Emirates began operating to Auckland. It is now opportune to underline our New Zealand presence with support of a high-profile event that is watched by large numbers, both on the course and on television. Golf is a very high participation sport in New Zealand and it also has spectator and viewing appeal across the board.

"The Open promises to be up there with the best, with a number of notable players competing to honour the 50th anniversary of the NZ Open win by that great New Zealand left-hander, Sir Bob Charles. We felt it was a fitting occasion on which to inaugurate our sponsorship programme in New Zealand," Mr Lethbridge added.

Since August 2, Emirates has linked New Zealand and the rest of the world with three flights daily. The carrier operates daily flights across the Tasman between Auckland and Sydney, Melbourne and Perth, and onwards to Dubai.

Emirates is already a prominent golf sponsor, with its support for the PGA European Tour's Dubai Desert Classic and the BMW International Open in Germany. The airline has emerged as a major sponsor of world class events, currently supporting the FIFA World Cup Germany 2006, FIFA World Youth Championship UAE 2003, FIFA Confederations Cup Germany 2005, Chelsea Football Club and the Asian Football Confederation. Its major horse racing sponsorships include the Dubai World Cup, and the Melbourne Cup Carnival. On the rugby scene, the carrier is title sponsor of the Emirates Airline Dubai, London and South Africa Rugby Sevens. Emirates is also a sponsor of the. International Cricket Council's elite team of world umpires.
