Affordable Art Show set to grow the art market

Affordable Art Show set to grow the art market.

New Zealand’s first Affordable Art Show has been officially launched by Wellington Mayor Kerry Prendergast who believes that it will reinforce Wellington’s enviable reputation as the creative capital of New Zealand.

“This city, and country, has a huge wealth of artistic energy and for a few days the spotlight will deservedly shine on our established artists, as well as hopefully unearthing some incredible new talent. This has the potential to become one of our iconic events.”

An initiative of the recently established New Zealand Affordable Art Trust, the show will provide new, emerging and well-known artists with an opportunity to display their works to thousands of potential customers. Buyers will also benefit from the chance to own an original piece of art, no matter what their budget.

While similar shows have been held around the world this is the first time the concept has been used in New Zealand. However overseas experience bodes well, as Sydney’s inaugural show last year attracted 13,000 visitors who bought almost five million dollars worth of art.

According to the Trust’s Chair Mark Blumsky the New Zealand Affordable Art Show will provide something for everyone.

“Our vision is for every home and office to have a piece of original New Zealand art on their wall. We are looking to introduce art to a new audience, many of whom we expect will purchase their first piece of art at the show.”

“Yet at the same time even the serious art collectors will enjoy access to new works by well-known artists from throughout the country, all conveniently located in one place.”

Artist applications are now being sought across the mediums of painting, photography, glass, ceramics and sculpture and while all art will be priced between $100 - $5000, being affordable does not mean that quality will be sacrificed. A group of respected artists and art buyers will determine the quality guidelines and oversee the selections.

Renowned Wellington artist Lynne Sandri believes that the New Zealand Affordable Art Show provides a fantastic opportunity for all artists.

“To show your work to thousands of potential buyers is as important for an established artist as it is for a new one, and I think you can expect to see hundreds of people wanting to exhibit.”

“There are certainly going to be some real gems discovered, as some of the artists will not previously have had the opportunity to publicly exhibit their work. It will provide them with the perfect chance to provide a few pieces and hopefully make some sales.”

The New Zealand Affordable Art Show will take place over three days at The Events Centre in Wellington from Friday 13th August through to Sunday 15th August. A charitable trust has been established to run the show with any surplus proceeds from the being used to assist deserving artists to further their careers.
