TEC evaluating research quality in tertiary sector

Next steps following Tertiary Education Commission’s report evaluating research quality in tertiary education sector

Following the release of the Tertiary Education Commission’s Performance-Based Research Fund report, a number of initiatives are now underway.

An independent evaluation of the process used in the TEC’s quality evaluation of tertiary education research is being undertaken and will be available later this year.

“This is an important part of our commitment to seeking continual improvement in our assessment processes,” said the TEC Acting Chair Kaye Turner today.

“In addition, the reports of each of the 13 assessment panels that evaluated the Evidence Portfolios of almost 6,000 research academics, as part of the Performance-Based Research Fund process, are available on the TEC website today: www.tec.govt.nz

“A Moderation Panel oversaw the assessment process conducted by the 12 review panels of experts. The Moderation Panel was satisfied that the results of the 2003 Quality Evaluation are credible, fair and fully justified. The Moderation Panel ensured cross-panel consistency and that all assessed researchers were treated fairly and equitably.

“Another important step is the TEC’s decision to proceed with a consultation process about an international comparison of research quality involving New Zealand universities.

“We are now working on a process of consultation to obtain views about making an international comparison as well as what methodological considerations would need to be considered,” said Ms Turner.
