Student Teachers support Vic Protest

The Students’ Association at the Wellington College of Education (SAWCE) will today be supporting the protest against the Government’s inequitable policies towards students.

“Students are the only sector of society that have to borrow in order to live,” said Association President Greg Henderson.

“Why is their support available for every other New Zealand citizen but not students?” asked Henderson.

“it is high time the Government got itself together and realised that students are human beings who should not have to borrow to meet the basic costs of rent, food and power,” said Henderson.

“We will be telling Marian today that we, as students of Wellington, want to have support available to us while we study,” said Henderson.

“When 52% of students say in a survey that they would go overseas in order to pay off their student loans, there have got to be serious questions raised over whether this scheme is working,” said Henderson, referring to a survey conducted at the Wellington College of Education in 2003.
