New Zealand Official Yearbook 2000 Launched

The most comprehensive edition of the New Zealand Official Yearbook ever published was launched today by the Rt Hon Helen Clark, Prime Minister of New Zealand, at a function in Wellington's historic Bond Store.

Published jointly by Statistics New Zealand and publishers David Bateman Ltd, the special 2000 edition celebrates the last century's events and achievements, and looks towards New Zealand's future in the 21st century.

Features include biographies of notable New Zealanders, articles on significant events that occurred over the century, a wide range of historical photographs depicting some lesser known and fascinating aspects of New Zealand's past, items from past Yearbooks, and oral histories gathered from people around the country.

To mark the new century Statistics New Zealand commissioned 10 special articles covering Mäori, history, population, communications, employment, the environment, the economy, transport, and the country's social framework. These articles document 100 years of change, innovation, and the impact and interconnection of events over time.

The Yearbook continues to be an authoritative source of statistical facts and figures about the New Zealand "year that was". Covering such topics as the national economy, justice and law, arts and cultural heritage, and education, the 2000 Yearbook reflects its century old tradition as a valued reference tool.

Dianne Macaskill, acting Government Statistician, sees this Yearbook as "particularly special because of the range of information it encompasses. I must also pay tribute to the work and contributions of everyone associated with its production. The book exists because of the time and efforts of a vast range of people who willingly contribute to this important statistical publication".
