Women Can Have Confidence In Diane-35 - Schering

Schering NZ Ltd says New Zealand women can have confidence in Diane-35 and should continue to take their acne medication as usual, following their doctor's advice.

Diane-35 treats pronounced acne, hirsuitism (excessive hair growth) and polycystic ovary syndrome. Because it contains both an oestrogen (ethinylestradiol) and an anti-androgen (cyproterone acetate), women using Diane-35 do not need to take additional birth control.

The Ministry of Health today issued a statement advising women using the cyproterone acetate-containing oral contraceptive to talk to their doctor about the relative risks of oral contraceptives.

Schering supports the Ministry's view that it is important that women fully understand the benefits and risks associated with all forms of contraception, however the company considers that the recently published study the Ministry's statement is based on, has major weaknesses.

"Diane-35 is a well proven, safe and effective treatment for acne in women. Since its launch in 1985 about half a billion packs have been used by more than 35 million women worldwide. Unlike its generic competitor, Diane-35 is the only oestrogen/cyproterone acetate product on the market in New Zealand with a safety and efficacy record proven in clinical trials and in over 20 years of use," says Schering regulatory manager, Raewyn McNee.

"Diane-35 is available only on prescription and this ensures that each individual woman is assessed and advised appropriately by their doctor. The doctor will consider all risk factors before offering the best choice of therapy." Schering says women trust Diane-35 and value its therapeutic effects. Despite recent changes in funding, Diane-35 will remain available in New Zealand as many women prefer to stay on a medication on which they are well settled and which is producing results.

Detailed information for women using Diane-35 is available on Medsafe's website, www.medsafe.govt.nz

Schering AG is a research-based pharmaceutical company that has a major focus on researching and developing products for fertility control.
