Snapshot 5 Cities And Districts Cities And Districts

Overview

One in 10 New Zealand residents lived in Auckland City at the time of the 2001 Census, according to latest figures from Statistics New Zealand. The population count of our largest city reached 367,737 usuaresidents, followed by Christchurch (316,227), Manukau (283,197) and North Shore (184,821)

Manukau City had both the largest Mäori ethnicity count (44,274) and the highest proportion of Pacific peoples, with more than 1 in 4 residents. Auckland City had the second-highest number of Mäori residents at 29,139 and the highest proportion of residents of Asian ethnicity, with almost 1 in 5

English was the most widely spoken language by usuaresidents. This was followed by Mäori in alexcept nine territoriaauthorities where Samoan, Japanese, Korean and French were the second most widely spoken languages

The Chatham Islands District had the highest proportion of adults in the labour force with 4 in 5. In the Horowhenua District, nearly 9 in 20 adults were not in the labour force

Weekly average household rents were lowest in Mackenzie ($81), Waimate ($86) and Wairoa ($91) Districts. The highest weekly average household rents were recorded in North Shore City ($243)

1. Census usually resident population count

The largest city at the 2001 Census was Auckland, with a count of 367,737 usuaresidents or almost 1 in 10 of the New Zealand population. This was followed by Christchurch (316,227), Manukau (283,197) and North Shore (184,821) Cities

The smallest city was Upper Hutt (36,372). The largest district was Tauranga (90,906), followed by Rodney (76,182), Whangarei (68,091) and Hastings (67,428)

The smallest district was Chatham Islands (717).

2. Demographics

Chatham Islands District, with almost 130 males to every 100 females, had the highest male to female ratio. Kapiti Coast District had the lowest, with fewer than 90 males to every 100 females

Thames-CoromandeDistrict had the highest median age with 44.1 years, followed by CentraOtago 42.6 years, Waitaki 42.4 years, Kapiti Coast 42.3 years, Waimate 41.4 years and Banks Peninsula 40.7 years

More than 1 in 5 people in Kapiti Coast District were aged 65 years and over, the highest proportion of any city or district

1 in 17 people in the Chatham Islands District was aged 65 years and over, the smallest proportion of any city or district

3 in 10 people in Kawerau District were aged under 15 years, the highest proportion of any city or district

1 in 6 people in Queenstown-Lakes District was aged under 15 years, the lowest proportion of any city or district

1 in 15 people of Mäori ethnicity in Wairoa District was aged 65 years and over, the highest proportion of people of Mäori ethnicity in this age range of any city or district

9 in 20 people of Mäori ethnicity in Waimate District were aged under 15 years, the highest proportion of people of Mäori ethnicity in this age range of any city or district

3. Ethnicity

The city with the largest Mäori ethnicity count was Manukau with 44,274 people or 1 in 12 people of Mäori ethnicity in New Zealand. This was followed by Auckland (29,139) and Christchurch (21,960), while the smallest was Nelson (3,219)

Far North District had the largest Mäori ethnicity count, with 21,729 or 9 in 20 people, followed by Rotorua (21,609) and Gisborne (19,362)

6 in 10 people in Kawerau and Wairoa Districts were of Mäori ethnicity, the highest proportion of any city or district. In these districts the count of people of Mäori ethnicity exceeded the count of people of European ethnicity

1 in 7 people in Kaikoura District were of Mäori ethnicity, the highest proportion of any South Island city or district

1 in 4 people in Manukau City were of Pacific peoples ethnicity, the highest proportion of any city or district

of people of Pacific peoples ethnicity exceeds that of people of Mäori ethnicity in Manukau, Auckland (1 in 7), Porirua (1 in 4) and Waitakere (1 in 7) Cities

1 in 5 people in Auckland City were of Asian ethnicity, the highest proportion of any city or district

The count of people of Asian ethnicity exceeds that of people of Mäori or Pacific peoples ethnicity in Auckland, North Shore (1 in 8) and Wellington (1 in 9) Cities

98 percent of people in Waimate District were of European ethnicity, the highest proportion of any city or district

95 percent of people in Stratford District were of European ethnicity, the highest proportion of any North Island city or district

4. Language

English was the most widely spoken language by usual residents in all territorial authorities. Mäori was the second most widely spoken language in all except nine territorial authorities. Samoan was the second most widely spoken language by usual residents in Waitakere, Auckland, Manukau and Porirua Cities

Korean was the second most widely spoken language by usual residents in North Shore City. Japanese was the second most widely spoken language by usual residents in Queenstown-Lakes District

French was the second most widely spoken language by usual residents in Wellington City, and Banks Peninsula and Mackenzie Districts

5. Qualifications, income and work

1 in 2 adults in Wellington City had a tertiary qualification as their highest qualification, the highest proportion of any city or district

Wellington City had the highest median annuaincome for the year ended 31 March 2001 with $27,000, followed by North Shore City with $23,300 and Queenstown-Lakes District with $23,000

Nearly 1 in 4 adults in Wellington City was earning more than $50,000, the highest proportion of any city or district

1 in 21 adults in Wairoa District was earning more than $50,000, the lowest proportion of any city or district

7 in 10 adults in Opotiki District were earning $20,000 or less, the highest proportion of any city or district

4 in 5 adults in the Chatham Islands District were in the labour force, the highest proportion of any city or district. The next highest proportions of over 3 in 4 were in Queenstown-Lakes, Southland and Selwyn Districts

Nearly 9 in 20 adults in Horowhenua District were not in the labour force, the highest proportion of any city or district. The next highest proportions were in Kapiti Coast and Thames-CoromandeDistricts

7 in 8 adults of Mäori ethnicity in Queenstown-Lakes District were in the labour force, the highest proportion of people of Mäori ethnicity in the labour force of any city or district. The next highest proportions of 4 in 5 were in CentraOtago and Clutha Districts

Over 4 in 10 adults of Mäori ethnicity in Otorohanga District were not in the labour force, the highest proportion of people of Mäori ethnicity not in the labour force of any city or district. The next highest proportions were in Far North, Opotiki and Kaipara Districts

For 40 out of the 74 territoriaauthorities, the main occupationagroup was agriculture and fishery workers. Service and sales workers was second with 20 out of 74

Professionals was the main occupationagroup in Auckland, Hamilton and Wellington Cities and Banks Peninsula District

Plant and machine operators and assemblers were the main occupationagroups in Kawerau and Gore Districts

For adults of Mäori ethnicity, 28 of the 74 territoriaauthorities had plant and machine operators and assemblers as the main occupationagroup. Service and sales workers was second with 27, while agriculture and fishery workers was third with 15

6. Households and dwellings

North Shore City had the highest average household weekly rent of $243, followed by Wellington ($237) and Auckland ($236) Cities

Queenstown-Lakes District had the highest South Island average household weekly rent of $191

Mackenzie District had the lowest average household weekly rent of $81, followed by Waimate ($86) and Wairoa ($91) Districts

InvercargilCity had the lowest city average household weekly rent of $106

Manukau City had the highest average number of people per household with 3.3, followed by Porirua (3.1) and Waitakere (3.0) Cities

Buller, Thames-Coromandeand Waitaki Districts had the lowest average number of people per household with 2.3

Buller and Westland Districts had the highest proportion of one-person households with almost 3 in 10

Waimakariri District had the highest proportion of owned dwellings (with or without a mortgage) with more than 8 in 10

Auckland City had the lowest proportion of owned dwellings (with or without a mortgage) with fewer than 6 in 10

North Shore City had the highest proportion of households with Internet access with 53 percent
