Man Charged With Baby Kahu Kidnapping

22 April 2002

Lower Hutt detectives have this morning arrested and charged a Taumarunui man with the kidnapping of baby Kahu Durie.

Detective Inspector Stuart Wildon said the 54-year-old Taumarunui man will appear in the Taumarunui District Court this morning.

A request will be made for a remand to the Lower Hutt District Court. It’s likely further charges will follow.

Police swooped on a rural Taumarunui house early Sunday evening and found baby Kahu. She is safe, has been checked by a doctor and reunited with her parents lawyer Donna Hall and Justice Eddie Durie.

Mr Wildon said he is delighted baby Kahu is back with her parents. He added there is still a lot of investigative work to do on the inquiry.
