NEWSFLASH: US Election Heads Down To Wire

With polls closed in all except the far Western states of Washington, Oregon, California and Alaska CNN is continuing to call the US Presidential Election too close to call.

CNN has been declaring results on the basis of a combination of exit polls a key precinct (the US equivalent of booths) results.

CNN has also reversed its call on the key state of Florida – with its 25 electoral college votes – and has moved it back into the too close to call column. Texas Governor George Bush is also disputing the call on the state of Pennslyvania which the US TV networks have called for Al Gore.

As of 4pm NZT Bush had 212 electoral votes to Vice President Al Gore’s 167. 270 electoral votes are needed to win the election.

US Election watchers are expecting a long night of counting ahead.
