BREAKING NEWS

It's 'Difficult' Out There

* JOHN B. FAIRFAX, head of Rural Press, says the group's regional publications are finding sales difficult to attain in softened economic times. He says earnings could be 10 per cent down in the second half of the financial year. This announcement came after 10 consecutive record profits.

* FAIRFAX said: 'Equity accounted losses from investments in the start up agricultural portals in Australia (thefarmshed.com.au) and the US (directag.com) were expected to amount to approximately $2 million over the full year. Trading losses from the group's involvement in outdoor advertising in Street Vision Pty. Limited were expected to amount to approximately $3 million over the full year.

* RURAL PRESS said: 'In spite of the difficult trading environment, the Board and Management were confident of the company's long-term future performance from its core publishing, printing and radio businesses. Local and regional economic conditions were sound, generally good seasonal conditions existed in the company's agricultural markets and prevailing strong prices in the major rural commodities are expected to continue. With some recovery in general economic conditions and a lift in business and consumer confidence, Directors are confident of a return to improved profit performance in the next financial year and re-establishing the record of profit growth.'

$10,000 Fine For 6PR, Sattler

* TONY BELL, Southern Cross Broadcasting CEO, says an appeal will be lodged against a Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission ruling that Perth radio station 6PR and presenter HOWARD SATTLER each pay $10,000, after comments were deemed to have 'degenerated into a denigration of the Nyungah people, their religion and culture'. PETER WILMOTH of The Age noted: 'Commenting on protesters trying to stop a redevelopment at the former Swan Brewery in Perth, a guest on the program said: 'You know for 80 years while it was brewing grog it didn't worry the Waugyl, as soon as it stopped brewing grog, up pops Waugyl ... Shame the first time he popped up the first workman didn't clean him up with a shovel.' SATTLER now broadcasts on Sydney's low-rating 2SM. COMMISSIONER GRAEME INNES said SATTLER had abused his position as a broadcaster.

SCB Puts Deal Idea To ABA

* TONY BELL'S Southern Cross Broadcasting is proposing a deal with Curtin Radio, according to CATIE LOW of WA Business News: 'Investment worth up to $800,000, including a brand new FM transmitter, might be just the sweetener needed to convince Curtin Radio to do a deal with local commercial AM radio stations. A proposal put together by Southern Cross Broadcasting, the licensee of 6PR, and Capital Radio, which owns 6IX, could result in Curtin Radio relinquishing its FM frequency earmarked by the Australian Broadcasting Authority in return for the cost of a new FM transmitter and three years maintenance. Disappointed with the solutions offered for 6IX's transmission problems by the ABA's draft licence area plans, Southern Cross Broadcasting and Capital Radio commissioned engineers' reports to see if there were any additional FM frequencies available.'

* MICHAEL JONES, Curtin Radio station manager reportedly told LOW that Southern Cross Broadcasting and Capital Radio proposed the station take a 10 kilowatt frequency their engineers had identified, which would free up Curtin Radio's 16 kilowatts frequency for 6IX. 'In return they would pay for equipment for conversion to FM and maintain it for three years,' MR JONES said. Curtin Radio and 6AR Aboriginal Radio stand to receive investment worth between $300,000 and $400,000 each if the proposal is accepted by the ABA. 'We've asked for a formal offer, they've done preliminary testing on the 10 kilowatts frequency and there doesn't appear to be a problem, but we need to investigate further into the frequency they've identified,' MR JONES said.'

* DANNY LANNEN, Editor of The Wimmera Mail-Times, had to run an embarrassing make-good on Saturday: 'And still the glitches happen. * ROBERT GEE, industrial analyst, had a scare for WA Newspaper Holdings stockholders: 'There is no sign of any recovery in the forseeable future and newsprint prices are due to go up next financial year.' Shares fell by 9 cents in Friday's trading, as investors absorbed its 7.2 per cent fall in pre-abnormal net earnings for the nine months to March 31.

* ALAN REVELL'S re-designed Sun-Herald actually looks like it wants to attract readers. The design makeover is excellent, content is first-class, but the introduction of a broadsheet lift-out mid-book is annoying.

* EDDIE McGUIRE'S Who Wants To Be A Millionaire would be forced off air under proposed Federal Government gambling laws, reports The Sunday Telegraph. 'The laws are designed to ban Internet gambling but intentionally threaten many television programs. This is because the definition inadvertently included interactive television programs where viewers can phone in or log in on a website to take part in the show.'

* $1.5 MILLION: reported cost for RUPERT MURDOCH'S Sun newspaper to bring RONNIE BIGGS from Brazil to London. Editor DAVID YELLAND now has to face the Press Complaints Commission.

Bottom Line

* $2.8 BILLION LOST: SENATOR RICHARD ALSTON last week announced that the auction of datacasting licences was to be cancelled. 'What is datacasting?' asks DAVID SIBLEY of The Canberra Times. He answers: 'It is a peculiarly Australian invention - the bastard child of political expediency and convergent technologies, such as the Internet and telecommunications.'. BRUCE WOLPE, Fairfax Corporate Affairs Manager, was reported by MICHELLE GILCHRIST of The Australian to say that the Government should use the digital TV spectrum to create new free-to-air TV broadcasters.

The Last Word

* IAN WELSH, Publisher of Collectormania, doesn't look like he's expanding his Christmas Card list with his Page 3 announcement this month: 'Wanted.
