Scoop Feedback: Content Is King – Irrational Optimism

Playing Monopoly

Your "Playing Monopoly" [ Sludge Report #67 – Playing Monopoly On The NZ Web] was an excellent call. I've been net involved for as long as i can remember. I have had an Arpanet/Milnet address since my involvement in Honeywell in 1979 (grin). I was a communications consultant in distributed environments before that, so have a deep understanding of what makes the net a value added environment - content content and more content. It was small irony that I spoke with Testra Saturn erlier today and quite independantly voiced my concerns about telecom, microsoft and the risk of dominant position strategies. I respectfuly asked Saturn to serve up good deals to content providers for much the same reasons you identified. Content is King!

Scoop is one of the finest examples of content rich sites anywhere in the world... I am glad to have had the opportunity to have contributed, benefited and enjoyed exposure that we would have never otherewise have accomplished. Scoop enables. Keep the formulae, it works.

That flattery aside... I still think your front page, right hand side column needs an additional space of at least 2 pixels - the center column has'em.. make that right column a tad easier to read.. and you'll be perfect!

Thank goodness someone, somewhere in the media is trying to get away from the arrogance so often displayed by daily print and television media. I applaud you for your intention to be positive and to create a communicative source that will encourage people - we live in a wonderful country rich with opportunities, but does the media represent it in any way other than negatively? Why do we have such high youth suicide statistics and Alchohol and Drug abuse problems. I think the constant cynicism and increasing sensationalism of the print and electronic media has a lot to answer for.

I am not saying we don't have problems to be dealt with, we know otherwise, but to give this country and its people hope and an understanding of what is to be valued about life here, is so important if we are to go forward as a people. I am so pleased to hear that your organisation has ethics and values. Hang on to them. Lead the way out of a cynical media and lets go forward with irrational optimism.
