BREAKING NEWS

Sunday Newspaper Closes

* COLIN DUCK'S brave Sunday Advertiser tabloid experiment in Geelong has closed. There was no edition yesterday. There was no major announcement in Saturday's Geelong Advertiser, except to indicate that the Monday-Saturday editions were now 'Bigger, Better, Bolder, Bumper, Brighter and Banter'. The Monday edition of the broadsheet boasts that its Sports Extra section will now be 24 pages; Wednesday's edition will carry DERRYN HINCH'S column; and the Friday edition includes a seven-day TV guide. The Sunday Advertiser started last year as a four-week trial over the period of the Sydney Olympic Games. A newsroom staffer told Media Flash: 'It came as a shock to a lot of us here. Very senior management - as in overseas - made the decision.'

BREAKING NEWS

Radley Deals: 'Technical Breach'

* ADAM RADLEY, ISIS Communications founder, says he has only committed 'technical breaches' with an attempt by his company to sell 72.4 million shares plus options to Canadian Global Media, which has just declared bankruptcy. NICOLE LINDSAY of The Australian Financial Review says the Australian Stock Exchange banned RADLEY from voting at the ISIS AGM 'because of breaches to the escrow conditions on his 45 per cent stake in the company'.

ACP Buys 4.9 Per Cent of PMP

* KERRY PACKER'S Australian Consolidated Press purchased a strategic 5 per cent holding in PMP Ltd. DAVID GARDINER, ACP Chief Financial Officer, was reported by Australian Associated Press to say that the acquisition was made during the past few months to protect its interests. ACP is said to have complained to PROFESSOR ALLAN FELS' ACCC about the possible PMP merger with the IPMG group controlled by the families of MICHAEL HANNAN and JOHN B. FAIRFAX.

G'Day, G'Day To New Mag

* THE NATIONAL PARTY appears to be behind a new national magazine, G'Day G'Day, launched this month by Queensland-based publisher KEVIN C. KIEPE. Down Under Publishing and Promotions has produced the 68-page glossy, printed by PMP, distributed by Gordon & Gotch, and selling at newsagents for $7.95. KIEPE'S publishers' note says his recent trip around the country want 'action rather than words'. So, it seems, he has started a magazine full of words ... including interviews with National Party leader/Deputy PM JOHN ANDERSON, and politician BOB KATTER. The frontispiece carries a piece/ad(?) from the National Party of Australia which says it is 'supporting the vision'. A five-page article by ROBERT RICE carries a strapline: 'Nationals In Government - Fighting For You'. Many other interviewees are wearing cowboy hats.

Wild-FM Loses Licence Bid

* PROFESSOR DAVID FLINT'S Australian Broadcasting Authority judged that community radio station licence aspirant Sydney Youth Radio Inc 'is operated as part of a profit-making enterprise'. The ABA report says: 'Between March 1997 and September 2000, SYRI entered into 16 agreements with Did it! Pty Ltd, a company owned by the then President and current station manager of SYRI, ANTHONY GHERGHETTA. Most of the agreements relate to the production and sale of CDs using the name and logo of SYRI's on-air identifier, WILD; one agreement deals with the production and sale of CDs along with other matters; and the remainder relate to other agreements between SYRI and DIPL.'

* MORGAN WILLIAMS, 'one of the principals of Central Station Records ... is the current Treasurer and a former President of Sydney Gay and Lesbian Broadcasters Inc' 'SYRI is an integral part of an enterprise relating to the production and sale of CDs bearing the WILD name and logo. Because of this, the ABA has concluded that SYRI is operated as part of a profit-making enterprise.'

* DONALD ROBERTSON, ABA Manager, Media & PR, issued a News Release on Friday informing that Sydney's new community radio licence will be allocated to FREE Broadcast Incorporated (94.5 FM), Gadigal Information Service (93.7) and Muslim Community Radio (92.1).

Press Council: Complaints Upheld

* VINCENT FAZIO'S complaint to The Australian Press Council about The Australian has been upheld. He says an article implied that MR and MRS FAZIO do not reside at the Woy Woy address under which they are enrolled to vote in the Federal seat of Robertson and therefore were involved in a 'branch stacking crisis'. The APC upheld the complaint because 'of the gratuitous publication of the full address of the FAZIO Woy Woy house, and because the 'branch stacking' charge was not substantiated.'

* MAYOR ANNE PORTESS of the Herberton Shire (Qld) had her complaints against the Cairns Post upheld. The newspaper published a front-page picture of two bodies sprawled, one in a doorway of, and the other outside, an Atherton Tableland farmhouse, the result of a double shooting. 'Complaints about the publication of pictures of dead bodies present the Council with difficulties. The Council has adopted a general approach that there is a difference between photographs of the unidentified victims of foreign carnage and a front-page picture of a body in a local community where the victim is well known.'

* NAOMI ARROWSMITH and RON WATT were charged with criminal damage after an incident at last year's World Economic Forum in Melbourne. A magistrate dismissed the charge, but accepted a guilty plea from both persons to a lesser charge of wilful damage. The complainants were ordered to each pay $93 for a damaged padlock, but were awarded close to $3000 in costs. 'The Herald Sun described its report as 'completely accurate'. The Press Council accepts that it generally conveyed various details of the trial accurately. However there was a serious error of fact in referring to charges being 'withdrawn' instead of 'dismissed'. To this extent, the complaint is upheld.'

Sydney Siders

* VICTOR MELI was reported in Media Flash (March 10) as criticising 2GLF, in his role as a 2RDJ Director. A reader, probably with his own axe to grind (but doing it well), sends us Thursday's Media Release about a MR MELI from the NSW Department of Fair Trading:

* 'Meli preyed on those least able to afford it" One of the worst unlicensed car repairers seen in recent years in NSW has been fined over $5000 in Parramatta Local Court, the NSW Fair Trading Minister, JOHN WATKINS, said today. * 'MR WATKINS said a company owned by VICTOR MELI, Vosmo Pty Ltd was fined last week for contravening the Motor Vehicle Repairs Act by running an unlicensed vehicle repair business, RMX Automatics, in Cowper Street, Granville. * 'MR MELI also recently had a repairer's licence revoked for carrying out repair work below the acceptable trade standard. The licence was held by Caja Pty Ltd, a company operated by MELI and trading as AM Automatics. * "I do not want to see this man operating again as a car repairer," MR WATKINS said. "MELI preyed on those least able to afford it," he said. "He overcharged for substandard work and bullied his customers when they complained. "He is a serial rip-off artist - and it is time the public was warned against him.' * 'MELI has a long and appalling track record. Over the years, he has kept popping up behind at least 10 new businesses. What each business had in common was a record of complaints about misleading advertising, substandard workmanship and overcharging. The NSW Motor Vehicle Repair Industry Council has been involved in numerous disputes between vehicle owners and MELI'S former repair businesses. * 'In one case, a woman who owned a Magna car responded to MELI'S advertisement for a fully reconditioned exchange automatic transmission for $550, including installation. After the car had been left at MELI'S workshop, the owner was told the $550 had escalated to $1,100 because a torque converter was needed. After much unpleasantness - and faced with the prospect of having to tow away her car without a transmission - the owner reluctantly agreed to pay $950. This matter was taken to the Fair Trading Tribunal and an order was made for a refund to be made to the owner of $475. * During last week's Parramatta Court hearing, the Motor Vehicle Repair Industry Council lawyer described MR MELI'S behaviour as reprehensible and showing a total disregard and disdain for his legal obligations. "The court result shows that MELI'S business practices will not be tolerated," MR WATKINS said. 'NSW motor vehicle owners have a right to expect good quality repair work at a proper price," he said. * The Motor Vehicle Repair Industry Council, the official body dealing with complaints against vehicle repairers, can be contacted on 9712 2200.

Melbourne Memo

* PETER BLUNDEN'S elevation to Editor-in-Chief of all Herald & Weekly Times Ltd publications saw a facelift to this week's Sunday Herald Sun, which now strongly resembles the weekday editions. Editor ALAN HOWE'S edition now includes more pix rather than the slabs of types which earned criticism from News Corporation 'Deputy Chief Operating Officer' LACHLAN MURDOCH. Meanwhile, LACHIE would be happier with Sydney's Sunday Telegraph, where Editor JENI COOPER gave Page 7 prominence to PHILLIP KOCH'S yarn about a new movie - Head Over Heels - featuring model (although she is termed 'supermodel') SARAH O'HARE (MRS LACHLAN MURDOCH). The final paragraph of the story reads: 'To buy a ticket to the premiere of Head Over Heels or make a donation, call (02) 9235 3444.'

* ROSS and CHRIS McPHERSON'S Shepparton News made a 'donation' of 50 newsagent posters - 'Have You Seen This Man?' - to assist Police in their bid to catch a man who sexually assaulted two six-year-old girls at Nagambie. The brothers also appear to have started to reinvigorate the modern tabloid, after the last few audits saw sales head just a little south. Friday's edition commented that athlete 'CATHY FREEMAN is almost twice the person she used to be'. The paper also sent journalists CAMPBEL GILES and DEAN SAVAGE to hypnotist STEVEN SPELLMASTER. GILES noted her dirty dancing with a blow-up doll.

Queensland Quips

* RACHAEL TEMPLETON led a Gold Coast Bulletin special report on Saturday with an investigation showing 'one group of immigrants has slowly built up a multi-billion dollar property portfolio, snaring huge tracts of Gold Coast land, units and housing'. TEMPLETON reveals New Zealanders 'owns more than 98 per cent of all foreign-owned land on the Gold Coast.'

* HARRY GORDON, former Queensland Newspapers Editor-in-Chief and Herald & Weekly Times honcho, now of the Gold Coast, has been awarded the Olympic Order in Silver for outstanding service to the movement.

* TED HARRIS has had his complaint to the Australian Press Council dismissed about the Redland Times suburban newspaper. HARRIS was a Liberal Party campaign director. He issued a press release, which he complains was deliberately held over by the newspaper so it could contact the Labor Party member for his opinion and input. 'The story was published the following week ... quoting both sides ... The Press Council finds the article, and subsequent coverage of the issues, provided adequate balance.'
