Horomia’s House Helps Gosche’s Cause, PM Says

Revelations that a Tologa Bay house administered by Maori Affairs Minister Parekura Horomia has been condemned as unfit for human habitation have strengthened rather than weakened Housing Minister Mark Gosche’s call for a crackdown on landlords with sub-standard rental properties, Prime Minister Helen Clark said today.

Miss Clark said she had discussed the issue with Mr Horomia and expected the house to quickly be brought up to standard.

Miss Clark said the incident was not embarrassing for the Government, but is personally embarrassing for Mr Horomia. “I think he’s mortified,” she said.

“I think all members of Parliament who have properties will be scurrying away to see if their properties come up to scratch,” Miss Clark said at this afternoon’s post-Cabinet press conference.
