Opinion: Hope Amongst The Rubble

In the midst of the tragedy facing the United States, the world must take heed of the remarkable courage and hope that is surfacing out of the rubble. From the stories of horror, there is a common thread emerging that the people involved in the rescue efforts are not going to give up. The obvious pride, in the faces of the men who uncovered the five firefighters still alive this morning, was uplifting. The American people are hopeful that those who committed these acts of terrorism will be found and brought to justice.

It has been said, more than a few times on New Zealand Television this morning, that New York is a broken place and that New Yorkers are a broken people. This is not the picture that news reports directly from the U.S. are painting. New York is standing united in a common cause to work towards finding as many people alive as possible. Rescue Workers and Medical Staff are working tremendously hard and Civilians are doing their best to give support in any way possible.

It is a testament to human spirit, and to humanity, that in times of crisis, humankind are able to give all that they have to ensure survival. It remains, even after an attack such as this, that the essential elements of faith and hope are still in the hearts of the American People. This can be a symbol as we all unite together to support those who have been touched by this act of terror.
