Just an FYI to say that "Memory Hole" may have just found out about Operation Phoenix but in claiming "just uncovered" is total rubbish. It was pretty well known publicly in the mid-seventies. I've got a book here from those times entitled "The Phoenix Program" by Douglas Valentine. Says the cover: "For the first time ever, a shattering account of the most ambitious and closely guarded operation of the Vietnam War".
I guess we can stand many a "just uncovered" and "first time ever(s)", particularly as an endorser of the book says on the back cover "Can democracy in the U.S. survive another secret government attack on morality, and the rights of man?" The writer was Ralph McGehee, author of "Deadly Deceits".
Since the question was asked about democracy we've had the Nicaraguan Contras, Ollie North up to his armpits in mid-east funding scandals, DC pulling the plug on an early nineties local effort to topple Saddam..etc, etc.....plus a few voting machines with problems and vote counters with selective intent. However, nice to know democracy survives, warts and all....!!!!!
