Photo-Essay 2: 35,000 March Against GE In Auckland

Photo Essay 2: Greenpeace estimate that 35,000 people marched against Genetic Engineering in Auckland today. At least another 5000 people protested in Wellington and thousands more said no to GE in centres throughout New Zealand.

At around 12:45pm the front of the Anti-GE march had reached the Civic theatre on Queen and Wellesley streets. At that time, the tail of the march was still stretching around Customs St at the bottom of Queen. A Police officer told Scoop there was "at least" 25,000 on the march, estimates based on the length, density, and breadth. "This will be one of the biggest marches for a long time," the officer said.

The New Zealand Herald newspaper estimates 9000 people attended the march.
