Kiwibank Gets Anderton Local Award

Deputy Prime Minister Jim Anderton today became the first Cabinet Minister to receive the "Buck Stops Here" Award from the Palmerston Gateway to Gold Trust.

The Award, which was a surprise to Jim Anderton, was given to him after a meeting with the Trust, during his visit to the Otago region. The framed certificate said the award is for his efforts to get a New Zealand community-owned bank.

"It was a great award to receive and I will hang it on the wall in my office. The response to the community bank and issues of regional development has been overwhelming, wherever I go. The future of New Zealand lies in the hands of New Zealanders, and this Labour Alliance Government is committed to giving support to local communities in building their economies. Local banking is a necessary local resource," said Jim Anderton.

Jim Anderton is now pleased to be an honorary member of Palmerston Going for Gold Trust, which normally is granted to local individuals or businesses who are supporting local initiatives.

The Palmerston Gateway to Gold Trust runs a small banking facility accepting deposits and withdrawals in their town since banking services were removed by both Westpac and the BNZ.
