Government Lets Auckland Down On Key Transport Issue

The Government has clearly been stringing Auckland along with insincere promises about fixing the city's transport problems, National's Local Government spokesman Murray McCully said today.

A key meeting between the Mayoral Forum and the Government on the Tranzrail deal broke up today with the issue unresolved.

"Labour were falling all over themselves before the election promising the people of Auckland the sky the earth and the moon. But after a year in office they have completely failed to advance the one big-ticket issue they were asked to address.

"The Government sent two of its least capable Ministers to this crucial meeting - Mark Gosche and Judith Tizard, the Minister Hindering the Prime Minister on Auckland Issues.

"You shouldn't send children to do grown-ups work. If the Government is serious about resolving this crucial problem they should send Ministers who can speak with some authority.

"Instead it seems they are intent on stringing Auckland along, and failing to resolve the important issues," Mr McCully said.
