Tizard welcomes tough new pollution regulation

Auckland Central MP and Associate Minister for Transport Judith Tizard has welcomed a tough new pollution regulation that will target owners of vehicles that belch excessive fumes.

"Smoky vehicles polluting our environment are no longer welcome on our roads," she said.

"Research has already shown us that the emission of carbon monoxide and oxides of nitrogen in some areas of Auckland are above national air quality guidelines – this new rule is a real way in which we can work together to address pollution in our City."

Owners of vehicles that belch excessive fumes are the target of a new regulation, known as the 10 second rule, to come into effect in March. Under the 10 second rule a vehicle is not allowed to emit a continuous stream of clearly visible smoke or vapour for 10 seconds or more.

"We must be tough on pollution, the consequences of climate change on our planet let alone our city are grave. Unlike previous Government's – we are not prepared to ignore the environmental impact of actions," Judith Tizard said.

Government is already working on a range of environmentally friendly transport policies.

"Last June public transport received a huge boost when we improved redundant funding systems that could nearly double the amount available for public transport by $27 million over the next three years."
