Anderton accepts debate

Deputy Prime Minister Jim Anderton is accepting a challenge from someone called 'Alec Neill' to debate the kiwi bank at a venue of Mr Anderton's choice in Christchurch.

"I received a letter from someone claiming to be a National Party MP. I discovered that 'Alec Neill' is someone who keeps losing his seat in parliament and getting returned when other National MPs give up the ghost.

"Apparently 'Alec Neill' is the strongest challenger the National Party can find to debate the merits of a publicly-owned New Zealand bank.

"I am more than happy to be accountable for the Government's decision to allow New Zealand Post to establish a convenient, low cost bank."

Jim Anderton concedes that 'Mr Neill' will have all the advantages in the debate since he proposed it.

"It is difficult to prepare for a debate against someone I have never heard of. However, even though I'm the underdog in this debate, I hope that Christchurch people will take the opportunity to come along and make up their own minds."

The debate will be held at St Peter's Parish Centre, Fisher Ave, Beckenham.
