Lindsay Tisch

At approximately 9pm last night National MP Lindsay Tisch was allegedly assaulted by a group of youths outside his electorate office in Matamata.

Mr Tisch went to the office in a car driven by his wife, and upon exiting the car was approached by 4 or 5 youths and allegedly assaulted.

Mr Tisch managed to get back into the car and his wife drove him away to safety.

He suffered a number of minor injuries, and was back on the job today accompanying National Leader Jenny Shipley on visits to towns on the Coromandel.

Police arrested two youths last night in relation to the assault. The youths, aged 15 and 16, appeared in the Hamilton Youth Court this morning. A third youth, whose identity is known to Police, is still being sought.

Police say the youths were heavily intoxicated and were unaware of Mr Tisch's identity, or his role as an MP. A spokesman for Matatmata Police described the incident as a case of being in 'The wrong place at the wrong time'.
