Cheers Monteiths, but watch out for the hangover!
The Green Party is today congratulating DB
Breweries for its decision to keep the Monteiths brewery in
Greymouth open but is concerned about brewery workers’
jobs.
“I am delighted DB have seen sense after their stupid decision last week to close the historic Monteiths brewery,” said Green Party Co-leader Rod Donald.
“But the hangover is that DB have not guaranteed the 14 staff made redundant their jobs back.
“This is clearly because they are going to move some of their production to Auckland instead of expanding their West Coast operation.
“If they do that they are still making a mockery of the Monteiths brand and letting down the local community,” he said.
Rod Donald said there is a lesson to be learnt from the Monteiths’ saga, “once you lose control of a local business to overseas investors you lose your future security. It’s time we took charge of our destiny by investing in our local businesses.”
