Bradford Urges Rapid Action On Cull Recommendations

Green Party Northland MP Sue Bradford today welcomed the Cull Report into how health systems deal with medical misadventure but said she was concerned that the report did nothing for the women at the centre of the Graeme Parry scandal in Northland.

"What these women - and there are many of them - need right now is a full public inquiry into Mr Parry's actions over the past 20 years. They also need immediate legal and financial assistance to help them with the numerous complaints they are involved in with ACC, the Medical Council and the Health and Disability Commissioner," said Ms Bradford.

"So far I am not aware of these women receiving any such support and they continue to struggle with very difficult health and financial problems - caused in the first place by the adverse effects of the care they have received."

Ms Bradford said one aspect of the Cull recommendations looked at the possibility of providing financial support to people making medical misadventure claims.

"I endorse this recommendation whole-heartedly and only wish this could be implemented immediately so that the Northland women could receive some immediate relief," she said.

Ms Bradford said many of the women at the centre of the Parry case were spending many hundreds of dollars on new medical opinions which are required for them to take further action and this was morally indefensible.

"The recommendations in the Cull report are universally welcomed by the Green Party. We urge the Government to implement them as fast as possible and not to forget the desperate situation of the women in Northland who triggered this inquiry."
