Children Should Be Allowed Their Tricycles

Monday 9th Apr 2001 Donna Awatere Huata Media Release -- Education

ACT Education Review Office spokesman Donna Awatere Huata today labelled ERO recommendations that a Lower Hutt Early Childhood Centre have ‘tricycle-free’ days as political correctness gone mad.

“To suggest tricycles in the playground encourage competition, ownership and aggression is ludicrous.

“We should let children be children. What is wrong with a bit of competition and ownership?

“Introducing trike-less days would be nothing short of mean-spiritedness.

“My advice to the staff of the Best Beginnings Early Childhood Learning Centre is to ignore this politically-correct advice and concentrate on what they do best – preparing their pupils for the challenges of primary school education,” Mrs Huata said.
