Peters Confident of Cabinet Support for Superannuation Changes
The Rt Hon Winston Peters MP, Leader of New Zealand First, today said that he had written back to Dr Cullen following their meeting last week on superannuation with his suggested amendments and was confident that Cabinet would agree to these changes.
“Whilst they are not significant changes they will pave the way for future governments to make adjustments as necessary – and that is considerably more than we have had until now.
“This has been a positive example of MMP working for the people. However, it is disappointing that after 26 years of wasted opportunity on this issue so many political parties, opposed to at least getting something started in the way of savings, have proven themselves incapable of making MMP work and are desperate to get rid of a system that requires parties to work co-operatively.
“The Labour proposal is not what New Zealand First wants but at least it is better than nothing and it can be dramatically improved over time.
“The Labour Party has asked us for a more constructive working relationship and we have responded positively for the sake of the country,” said Mr Peters.
