Govt Should Indicate Position On Private Family Home Tax

The Government should move to stop the deep anxiety amongst homeowners that they are going to be taxed on their private houses, Opposition Leader Jenny Shipley said today.

As a matter of principle National does not support the Government introducing a tax on peoples' private family homes.

"Today I am seeking an urgent debate in parliament on the Tax Review Committee report submitted to the Finance Minister yesterday.

"National opposes the proposed private family home tax in the McLeod report.

"A person's home is their castle. Most New Zealanders work very hard and save over considerable time so they can afford to buy a home.

"It would be unfair to tax them when they finally achieve ownership of that asset, progressively penalising them more as they pay their mortgage off.

"We will be seeking a debate on the issue because the public needs a clear indication from Government whether it intends to tax the private family home or not," Mrs Shipley said.
