NZ-Oz South Pacific Whale Sanctuary Proposal

Conservation Minister Releases The 2001 Joint NZ-Australia South Pacific Whale Sanctuary Proposal

Conservation Minister Sandra Lee today released the joint New Zealand-Australia proposal to the International Whaling Commission for a South Pacific whale sanctuary which has already been distributed to delegations attending this year's annual meeting.

Ms Lee said there had been "enormous public interest" in the proposal not only within New Zealand, Australia and the South Pacific region but also in Britain which is hosting the 2001 IWC meeting.

The Conservation Minister is leading the New Zealand delegation to the decision-making 'Plenary Session' of the IWC which starts in London late tonight New Zealand time.
