Waitangi Day commemorative events

Prime Minister Helen Clark today announced $290,000 of government funding for Waitangi Day community events around the country.

The funding covers 44 events ranging from a re-enactment of the signing of the Treaty at Mangungu Mission in the Far North to an event on the West Coast to take kapa haka performances to local nursing homes.

“The events celebrate the positive aspects of Waitangi Day - the coming together of the peoples of New Zealand in a treaty partnership.

“I hope all New Zealanders find the time to take part in the commemorations on Waitangi Day. It is the day on which we celebrate New Zealand’s special character,” Helen Clark said.

The 'Commemorating Waitangi Day Fund 2001' supports activities which acknowledge the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi and is designed to encourage a country wide participation in the commemorations.

The Fund is administered by the Ministry of Culture and Heritage which assessed applications under criteria such as encouraging community participation and achievement, promoting a cultural experience and event, and providing participants with an opportunity to learn more about the Treaty of Waitangi.

NORTHLAND

Mangungu Mission: Nga Uri Whakatupu Hokianga $5,000.00
Reenactment of the signing of the Treaty at Mangungu Mission Landing with waka paddled by both Maori and Pakeha, waiata and videoing of the event. Bi-cultural remembrance of the Treaty.

Hokianga Harbour: Nga Kaitiaki Waka Trustees $10,000.00
Retracing of the journey tupuna would have taken on the Hokianga Harbour in order to have signed the Treaty, using waka as the mode of transport. Along the way, hui will be held at marae and community centres to create an awareness.

Waitangi: Waitangi Day Organising Committee $60,000.00
To fund celebrations at Waitangi (all planned activities are for the Treaty grounds only).

Waitangi: Network Waitangi Whangarei $1,200.00
To fund workshops aimed at Pakeha and tourists to inform them about the Treaty in a culturally safe and informal environment. Educators will be available to the public, voluntarily, for the three days at Waitangi.

AUCKLAND

Waiheke Island: Piritahi Marae Committee $2,000.00
Treaty workshop with historic perspective explored in terms of responsibilities that Maori and Crown have to each other. Will be interactive and invite participation with waka regatta to celebrate historical settlement of our country.

North Shore: North Art.Community Arts Centre $6,000.00
Fund a concert which aims to improve awareness of New Zealand's national day through the medium of performing arts.

Northshore: North Shore Migrant Centre Inc $3,500.00
A series of Treaty seminars for new migrants and refugees to appreciate the significance of Waitangi Day in Northcote, Glenfield and Sunnynook Community Centres. The finale will be a multicultural celebration on 6th Feb, plus a visit to Awataha Marae.

Auckland Central: Tamaki Treaty Workers Group (branch of WEA) $2,000.00
Public forum on the 6th Feb in central Auckland to mark the anniversary of the signing of the Treaty and to provide information about the background to the signing of the Treaty and its significance for today.

Auckland Central: Waiata Artists Inc Trust $5,000.00
Alongside the Tamaki Treaty Workers Group, the Waiata Trust plans to hold a celebration in Central Auckland to inform people of the Treaty.
Papakura: Papakura: District Council of Papakura $2,000.00
Commemoration event in Papakura. Programme includes speeches by dignitaries. Awards will also be presented to Maori youth.

Manukau: Toi o Manukau Maori Arts & Culture Trust $14,000.00
Festival over four days to commemorate the signing of the Treaty culminating in a musical and artistic event occurring outdoors in Hayman Park.

Otara: Asia Pacific Chamber of Commerce Inc $2,000.00
Fund an opportunity for new migrants and refugees together with local communities to appreciate the significance of Waitangi Day via seminars and by a Marae visit to appreciate Maori customs, culture and cuisine.

Nepal Community: New Zealand Nepal Society Inc $3,000.00
A seminar/workshop on the Treaty which includes a visit to a marae and cultural show.

Sri Lankan Community: ASPAC Inc $2,000.00
To fund a programme for Sri Lankan migrants about the traditions, laws and legislations in New Zealand including the Treaty. Also plan to translate the Treaty into Sri Lankan and distribute to households in Auckland region.

African Community of Auckland Region Inc $2,000.00
Funding to educate African refugees and migrants on the background, meaning and implications of the Treaty and to experience Maori culture.

Auckland Migrant Centre Inc $3,000.00
An opportunity for more new migrants and refugees together with local communities in both Onehunga and Kelston to appreciate the significance of Waitangi Day via a series of seminars and a community gathering.

Pakuranga Children's Health Camp and School $1,800.00
Camp children to develop a Treaty using Tapa Wha model, and to consider how the National Health Camp Charter can better reflect the Treaty.

Waiuku: Awaroa ki Manuka $6,000.00
Celebration of the signing of the Treaty with festivities and awards for Maori youth. Encourages local community involvement in the day.

BAY OF PLENTY

Tauranga: Tauranga District Council $2,000.00
A dawn service remembering the Treaty on the top of Mauao with speeches. Aims to involve all the community.

Rotorua: Youth Projects Trust 2,000.00
Encourage and promote community participation, particularly young people, in cultural awareness and cohesion with educational workshops of taiaha and mau patu, a kapa haka performance, as well as information on the Treaty.

Whakatane: Ngati Awa Arts Council of Te Runanga o Ngati Awa $6,000.00
A commemorative day including kapa haka, speeches, displays and activities. Ngati Awa will present the Treaty and its significance not only for Ngati Awa beneficiaries, but for the Whakatane District as a whole.

Opotiki: Te Ha o te Whanau Trust $5,000.00
Information sharing day within Opotiki using the local providers to share information about themselves and how the Treaty is implemented within their services. Day includes a reenactment, debate, and workshops.

Torere: Ngai Tai Iwi Authority $3,000.00
Education programme for the youth of Torere on the Treaty of Waitangi through a series of wananga looking at the relevance of the Treaty, understanding the Treaty itself and the principles.

GISBORNE / HAWKES BAY

Gisborne: Te Poho o Rawiri Marae $8,000.00
Celebration at Te Poho o Rawiri Marae to commemorate the signing of the Treaty: includes celebration of the cultural diversity of Gisborne, reconciliation and better understanding.

Gisborne:KaPai Kaiti & Te Hau Ora - Te Tairawhiti Inc. $10,000.00
Celebrations focusing on the Treaty in the local context - both historically and contemporary; includes various entertainment, open 'mike' debates and education.

Hicks Bay: Te Ataarangi Ki Wharekahika $2,000.00
Programme commemorating the signing of the Treaty. Resources available and workshops implemented over duration of course. Some will research/study the Treaty from inception in Te Reo.

Hastings: Kahungunu Maori Millennium Committee $12,000.00
Series of events alongside the river in Farndon Park close to where Ngati Kahungunu signed the Treaty. Events are both wide and specific with the key elements being fun, discovery, participation and interaction.

Hastings: Te Whatumanawa o te Whanau $5,300.00
Contributes to Kahungunu Maori event by re-enacting the signing of the Treaty. Will also offer waka rides and education for general public.

TARANAKI

New Plymouth District Council $3,000.00
Celebrations which will take place in a public place, facilitated by the Council in partnership with an iwi service provider, The proceeding will include: information, education, physical activities, food and cultural performances.

Taumarunui: Ngapuwaiwaha Marae $6,000.00
A Waitangi Historical/Fun Day to be held in conjunction with the 15 day Tira Hoe Waka Hokoi. The Day includes wananga on Treaty Issues, games and entertainment. Other community groups involved.

WELLINGTON

Porirua: Porirua Community Arts Council Inc $8,000.00
Festival to celebrate the universal elements of Earth, Fire, Air and Water in an inclusive way, embracing the Tangata Whenua and celebrating the cultural diversity of Porirua.

Porirua: Maraeroa Marae Association Inc $4,000.00
Community Forum about the Treaty and a whakairo expo/demonstration: use art as medium of cultural unity.

Upper Hutt: Orongomai Marae Community Centre Inc $10,000.00
Festival on Waitangi Day with participation from Maori and non Maori. Presentation of the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi by a guest speaker.

Wellington Central: Wellington Tenths Trust $15,000.00
Open air community festival incorporating a wide range of activities and involving many community groups. Central is the signing of the Treaty and the provision of opportunities to learn more about the Treaty through displays and discussions.

Wairarapa: Wairarapa Whanui Inc $5,300.00
Wananga to build community knowledge of the Treaty; includes whanau development programme, presenters and entertainment.

NELSON / MARBOROUGH

Blenheim: Omaka Maori Womens Welfare League $3,000.00
Community-focused day at Omaka Marae: includes displays and how the Treaty benefits the community, entertainment and food and guest speakers.

Nelson: Tasman Regional Sports Trust $5,000.00
Cultural celebration and physical activity involving high profile Maori sport and cultural celebrities for the Nelson and Tasman community.
