Law change needed to protect the protectors

National will change the law on name suppression to ensure that police officers involved in firearms incidents during the course of their duties are protected, says National's Police spokesman, Tony Ryall.

Commenting on the dismissal of a charge of murder against police officer 'Constable A' today, Mr Ryall said that police take extraordinary risks in the course of their duties and should not be further endangered by having their names published.

National has a Members Bill in the ballot to implement this policy.

"Police hold a special position in our community and this name suppression law change is needed.

"I want to acknowledge those media outlets who chose not to identify 'Constable A'," said Mr Ryall.
