National Loses Confidence In Race Relations Concil

Race Relations Conciliator Gregory Fortuin has destroyed National's confidence in his role, says National Leader Bill English.

"Mr Fortuin has shown he is not politically neutral yet his position is one which requires neutrality. That means he shouldn't be advising political parties.

"This is a case of triple-dipping as Mr Fortuin is also on the board of Jim Anderton's Industry New Zealand, and a director of New Zealand Post, the company which owns Jim's Bank.

"While Helen Clark says it is okay for Mr Fortuin to advise the Alliance while holding the position of a quasi-judicial officer, Michael Cullen admitted in Parliament today it was 'unwise' of Mr Fortuin.

"In light of this admission by the Government Mr Fortuin should consider whether he can keep his position," Mr English said.
