$2.5 Million for Auckland Policing Initiatives

Police Minister George Hawkins today unveiled a $2.5 million package designed to help ease pressures on police in the greater Auckland area.

The package includes funding for:
- 60 additional non-sworn staff;
- A second radio frequency for Auckland city; and
- A "modern cadet" scheme to attract 17 to 21 year olds into police careers (details to be announced by the end of the school year).

"I regularly hear about Auckland policing issues from both local government and the police. The great thing about today's package is that government is funding initiatives that have been suggested by local District Commanders, who know what Auckland needs.

"Staffing pressures are very real for Auckland, however we have another 92 more police due on Auckland's streets by the end of June. In addition, around 70 of the recruits in the next two intakes at the Police College will be headed for Auckland.

"This government recognises the importance of non-sworn staff in policing. They provide vital support, allowing front-line police to focus on front-line work. Since coming to office we have already increased the number of non-sworn staff to more than 1,950, and today's announcement will specifically improve the ability of Auckland's police to get the job done," said Mr Hawkins.
