Fortuin Withdraws Application
Tuesday, April 2, 2002
Associate Minister of Justice Hon Margaret Wilson said this afternoon it is with much regret she has accepted Gregory Fortuin’s decision to withdraw his name for the position of Race Relations Commissioner.
“In the short time Mr Fortuin held the office he displayed outstanding qualities as a motivator and facilitator of good race relations in New Zealand.”
Margaret Wilson said she respects and admires Mr Fortuin’s decision to put the credibility of the Human Rights Commission ahead of his own interests.
“I feel, however, his decision is the correct one.”
Margaret Wilson said she will now proceed to make a further recommendation to Cabinet on the Race Relations Commissioner appointment.
“I do not anticipate any undue delay in an appointment to the position, she said.
