New Alliance Party Name Revealed

2 April 2002

National MP Annabel Young has announced the results of an interactive poll to determine the name of Jim Anderton's new political party.

"Over 5000 votes have been cast on the National Party website over the last week, but the most popular choice, with just over 2000 votes, is 'I Love Being a Minister Party'.

"We are astounded at the high number of people who took part in this poll over such a short period of time. Possibly many voters were in fact Alliance Party members trying to send a message to Jim Anderton. Perhaps Mr Anderton should take this poll into account, along with the response to his letter to members, when he announces his separation this week.

"The name is a fitting choice. Jim Anderton has previously described party hoppers as 'immoral' and 'unethical', but somehow it is different when he is the defector. He is now set to avoid his own party-hopping law so he can stay in his job," said Ms Young.

The full results of the poll are still available at www.national.org.nz
