Confusion As Frontal Impact Rules Take Hold
Car dealers and car compliance checkers are finding that the rules are changing again, ACT Transport Spokesman MP Penny Webster said today.
"Since the frontal impact standards were introduced on Monday, car dealers have tried to comply with the new rules. However, it appears that the Land Transport Standards Authority have moved the goal posts yet again.
"Dealers are finding on the LTSA website that cars registered in Japan in 1997 require an exemption to be imported. Dealers were told that cars manufactured in Japan after 1 January 1996 would comply with the rules. Now they are being told that they don't.
"Dealers are trying to run a business and comply with regulations.
"This is the sort of nonsense that is created when the Minister flouts official advice. Mr Gosche was told this wouldn't work. Now less than two days into the new standards, the rules are being changed again.
The Minister should withdraw the whole thing until he can get it right, or forget it all together as it is not necessary," Mrs Webster said.
